CAA-call

Karen Gergely and I are co-chairing a panel at the CAA Conference in NYC, Feb 13-16, 2019, entitled, Social Practice & Service Learning. We’re looking for presenters. Here’s the abstract:

Based on feedback from our Teaching and Social Practice roundtable from CAA 2018, we are calling for presentations from artists, designers, and art historians, which examine similarities and differences between social practice and service learning, as well as identifying approaches, tools, and best practices that can be useful for either or both. Further, this panel also welcomes examinations of cross-campus collaborations integrating socially engaged practice, service learning, and other disciplines.

For the purposes of this panel, we will categorize social practice as social engagement and collaboration with individuals, communities, and institutions as a form of participatory art. Service-Learning will be defined as a pedagogical method designed with the mission of student attainment of discipline specific knowledge through creatively designed active learning community-based projects benefitting community members or groups (definition from UMass Dartmouth Leduc Center for Civic Engagement).

Proposals are due by August 6, 2018. CAA membership is required at the time of acceptance. Conference registration fee is required of all. To submit, please email the following directly to session chair(s): ellen@ellenmueller.com, Gergely1@graceland.edu
