“A Line that Grows” is a conceptual line drawing using 28 nodding onions (Allium cernuum) as the drawing material. It is a living installation in Test Plot MN‘s garden that I will be returning to throughout the summer to document the line’s growth. Will parts of the line die making it more of a dashed line? Will other parts become more blob-like? When and how will this temporary line eventually disappear as the greater garden evolves?
I picked nodding onions because it’s a native plant to Minnesota, and alliums are bunny-resistant due to their flavor and smell. They also thrive in the sun (planting for climate change).
At the May 31, 2025, 3-4pm community planting event, zines about the project were handed out. I’ll also be hosting drawing and making sessions with other artists at the site – stay tuned for more information.

Thank you to Northern Holler, an artist-owned local plant nursery in Burnsville, MN – I strongly recommend the excellent service you will receive from Preston Drum!

I’ve created this zine to provide a little bit of context about the project:

This quarter-page zine shares info about planting and using nodding onions for cooking. It also contains four other artists working with plants and lines.

I’ll be visiting the site every two weeks throughout the summer to document growth.
