General approach:
The productions I choose to work on are most often a precarious balance
between entertainment and critical analysis of our society. My approach
is ambitious and experimental in terms of point of view and design.
Specific attention is paid to maintaining authentic relationships. Additionally,
I follow the theory that the more personal and true a piece is, the
more likely audiences are to develop a universal connection with it.
Along these lines, I am interested in how performance can affect and
change individuals and their communities.
With my background
in visual art, sifting a piece down to key themes and distinctive images
is a standard step. Additionally, I keep in mind key reasons people
attend theater productions: to be entertained, to identify with the
stories & characters on stage, and to share a live experience with
other human beings. With all my works, I aim to inspire thought, discussion,
and change.
"You must be the change
you wish to see in the world." -Mahatma Gandhi
"I say in speeches
that a plausible mission of artists is to make people appreciate being
alive at least a little bit. I am then asked if I know of any artists
who pulled that off. I reply, 'The Beatles did'." -Kurt Vonnegut
